Our History

Our rich history that reflects our journey through the fascinating world of teas.

Now

2023 - present

In celebration of our 20th anniversary we decided it was time for a brand refresh and a new name, Portal Tea. We’ve added new wholesale tea products, such as our Chai Concentrates (inspired by our chai blends), Nitro Teas (RTD Iced Teas infused with nitrogen), Sparkling Teas, Matcha Latte Mixes and creating our own line of plastic free pyramid tea bags. Rolling out our new wholesale Co-Packing Division in Spring 2024, we now offer private label and custom tea (and cold brew coffee) products to wholesale clients

01

2003

We started out in 2003 as a cozy tea shop on NW 23rd in Portland, Oregon. Naming our company Tea Chai Te (tea in three different languages), we carried 46 teas from around the world and were known as the first company to bring bubble tea (and free wifi) to Portland.

02

2006

We began creating our own tea blends, expanding our menu to 84 teas. We also started brewing kombucha in house, using some of our customers favorite teas, such as Strawberry Sencha, Assam and Coconut Oolong.

03

2008

We expanded our tea menu again to include 128 teas, including an organic Apothecary line of herbal tea blends. We entered 8 of our teas into the State Tea Competition, with all of them earning an award! The following teas are still available, 1st Place Winners: Coconut Oolong, Velvet Oolong, Sencha Fukamushi, Be Well* (renamed Be Swell in 2012),  Peppermint & Caramel Creme Brulee.

04

2011

We opened our historic Sellwood Caboose tea shop, which is in a red 1920 Seattle Pacific Railroad caboose with original skybox seating.

Due to customer demand, we decided to start bottling our kombucha under a new brand, Happy Mountain Kombucha. HMK has been made with white peony tea blends we created and have been more like fizzy sodas, than medicinally strong tasting kombuchas and are available locally and regionally.

05

2009 - 2021

Opened a few more dreamy tea shops, including our Eugene location in 2021, highlighting local artists monthly in each one.
