5 Ways to Use Leftover Tea Leaves 🍵🌱

Reduce, Reuse, Re-steep!

At Portal Tea, we believe in making the most of every cup of tea—from the first sip to the last leaf. If you’re like us and brew loose leaf tea regularly, you might wonder what to do with those used leaves once your cup is empty. Instead of tossing them out, here are four creative (and eco-friendly!) ways to repurpose your leftover tea leaves.

1. Re-steep Your Tea Leaves

Many teas, especially oolongs and puers, can be steeped multiple times. With each steep, new flavors and aromas unfold, often making the second or third cup just as enjoyable as the first! If you haven’t tried resteeping your favorite tea yet, give it a shot!

2. Compost for Your Garden

Tea leaves are packed with nutrients, making them a perfect addition to your compost bin. Rich in nitrogen, they can help improve soil quality and support healthy plant growth. Simply add your used, fully dried leaves to your compost pile, or mix them directly into your garden soil for a natural fertilizer boost.

3. DIY Tea-Infused Skincare

Why not give your skin the same care that you give your taste buds? Used tea leaves can be repurposed into a refreshing facial scrub or body exfoliator. Green tea, for example, is known for its antioxidant properties. Simply mix the leftover leaves with honey or yogurt for a nourishing face mask, or combine them with sugar and coconut oil to create an all-natural body scrub. Your skin will thank you!

4. Freshen Up Your Fridge

Did you know that tea leaves can act as natural deodorizers? Place dried, used tea leaves in a small, breathable bag (like a cheesecloth or muslin) and pop it in your fridge to help absorb any unwanted odors. This is a great alternative to chemical-based fresheners and an easy way to make your fridge smell clean and fresh.

5. Scented Sachets for Drawers

Place dried, fragrant tea leaves in small cloth bags to create natural scented sachets. These can be placed in your drawers, closets, or even in your car to keep things smelling fresh and lovely. Lavender, chamomile, and mint leaves work especially well for this! 🌸
